Women in Architecture

Patano Studio, Gauge Design Group, and Dovetail General Contractors came together to produce “Women in Architecture” for Seattle Design Festival’s 2017 Block Party. The Design Festival’s prompt “Power” inspired the Patano Studio team to create an structure that manifests the position of women in the field of architecture, specifically the lack of women in higher level architectural positions. Women make up 49 percent of architecture students and 39 percent of interns, but just 17 percent are firm principals and partners, according to a 2012 AIA survey of 2,805 member firms. While women ascend the architectural career ladder, thousands hit a glass ceiling, leave the profession, or get pushed out. Following the close of the Block Party the piece was relocated to architectural bookshop/Seattle institution, Peter Miller books where it will live until the end of October.
